José-Maria de Heredia, né le 22 novembre 1842 à Cuba et mort le 2 octobre 1905 en France, au Château de Bourdonné en Seine-et-Oise, est un homme de lettres d'origine cubaine. Né donc sujet espagnol, il a été naturalisé français en 1893. Son œuvre poétique a fait de lui l'un des maîtres du mouvement parnassien. Il est l'auteur d'un seul recueil, Les Trophées, publié en 1893 et comprenant cent-dix-huit sonnets qui retracent l'histoire du monde, comme Les Conquérants, ou dépeignent des moments privilégiés, comme Le Récif de corail, ainsi que quatre poèmes plus longs.
Joseph Addison was an English essayist, poet, playwright, and politician. He was the eldest son of Lancelot Addison. His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend Richard Steele, with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. His simple prose style marked the end of the mannerisms and conventional classical images of the 17th century.
Joseph Butler was an English Anglican bishop, theologian, apologist, and philosopher, born in Wantage in the English county of Berkshire. He is known for critiques of Deism, Thomas Hobbes's egoism, and John Locke's theory of personal identity. The many philosophers and religious thinkers Butler influenced included David Hume, Thomas Reid, Adam Smith, Henry Sidgwick, John Henry Newman, and C. D. Broad, and is widely seen as "one of the pre-eminent English moralists." He played a major, if underestimated role in developing 18th-century economic discourse, influencing the Dean of Gloucester and political economist Josiah Tucker.
Joseph John Campbell was an American writer. He was a professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience. Campbell's best-known work is his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), in which he discusses his theory of the journey of the archetypal hero shared by world mythologies, termed the monomyth.
