Daniel Clement Colesworthy was an American printer, bookseller, and poet. He was born in Portland, Maine in 1810, the son of Daniel P. and Anna Collins Colesworthy. He became a printer, having served an apprenticeship in the office of Arthur Shirley, beginning at the age of 14. Early in his life, he became the editor and publisher of a young people's paper first known as The Sabbath School Instructor, and afterwards Moral Reformer, and Journal of Reform, which did not last many years.
Daniel Coit Gilman was an American educator and academic. Gilman was instrumental in founding the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale College, and subsequently served as the second president of the University of California, Berkeley, as the first president of Johns Hopkins University, and as founding president of the Carnegie Institution.
Daniel Czepko von Reigersfeld (1605–1660) was a German Lutheran poet and dramatist, known for his mystical verse influenced by Jacob Böhme. "Czepko" was his family name, so he is commonly known as Daniel Czepko.
Daniel De Leon, alternatively spelt Daniel de León, was a Curaçaoan-American socialist newspaper editor, politician, Marxist theoretician, and trade union organizer. He is regarded as the forefather of the idea of revolutionary industrial unionism and was the leading figure in the Socialist Labor Party of America from 1890 until the time of his death. De Leon was a co-founder of the Industrial Workers of the World and much of his ideas and philosophy contributed to the creations of Socialist Labor parties across the world, including: Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Socialist Trade and Labor Alliance.
Daniel Defoe was an English writer, trader, journalist, pamphleteer and spy. He is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, which is claimed to be second only to the Bible in its number of translations. He has been seen as one of the earliest proponents of the English novel, and helped to popularise the form in Britain with others such as Aphra Behn and Samuel Richardson. Defoe wrote many political tracts, was often in trouble with the authorities, and spent a period in prison. Intellectuals and political leaders paid attention to his fresh ideas and sometimes consulted him.
Daniel Clement Dennett III is an American philosopher, writer, and cognitive scientist whose research centers on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and philosophy of biology, particularly as those fields relate to evolutionary biology and cognitive science.
Daniel Dorchester was an American Methodist Episcopal minister. He was born at Vernon, Connecticut, January 25, 1790. He was drafted for service in the war of 1812, and soon after his term of military duty expired he was licensed to preach. In 1816 he entered the traveling ministry in the New England Conference, and served as minister and presiding elder until his final superannuation in 1850. He defended Methodism in a time when it was "much spoken against." On many of his circuits there were extensive revivals. In 1853 he went to the West; in 1854 was made librarian of the public library and reading-room in Chicago, and died near that city August 6, 1854.
