Jacob Philip (Jaap) van Praag was a Dutch humanist who played a prominent role in establishing the Dutch Humanist League. He was its chairman from 1946 to 1969. And, from 1954 to 1974, he was a member of a provincial Executive.

Jabari Asim is an author, poet, playwright, and professor of writing, literature and publishing at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the former editor-in-chief of The Crisis magazine, a journal of politics, ideas and culture published by the NAACP and founded by historian and social activist W. E. B. Du Bois in 1910. In February 2019 he was named Emerson College's inaugural Elma Lewis '43 Distinguished Fellow in the Social Justice Center. In September 2022 he was named Emerson College Distinguished Professor of Multidisciplinary Letters.

Jaber Fandy "Jay" Gubrium is an American sociologist and social psychologist. Now retired, he is professor emeritus in the University of Missouri Department of Sociology. Previously, he was professor of sociology at the University of Florida, 1987-2002, and professor of sociology at Marquette University, 1970–1987.

Jabir Novruz was an honored art worker and the national poet of Azerbaijan, and secretary of the Union of Azerbaijani Writers for three decades. Considered one of the most prominent authors of modern Azerbaijani poetry, his work is known for a romantic style that inspired patriotism. He was active in bringing important national issues to the attention of his fellow citizens, and was elected to the National Assembly in 1995. Through his translations, Novruz brought world poetry to the people of Azerbaijan, and his own works have been translated and published in other languages and have also been used as lyrics in many popular Azerbaijani songs.

Jabra Ibrahim Jabra was an Iraqi-Palestinian author, artist and intellectual born in Adana in French-occupied Cilicia to a Syriac Orthodox Christian family. His family survived the Seyfo Genocide and fled to the British Mandate of Palestine in the early 1920s. Jabra was educated at government schools under the British-mandatory educational system in Bethlehem and Jerusalem, such as the Government Arab College, and won a scholarship from the British Council to study at the University of Cambridge. Following the events of 1948, Jabra fled Jerusalem and settled in Baghdad, where he found work teaching at the University of Baghdad. In 1952 he was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities fellowship to study English literature at Harvard University. Over the course of his literary career, Jabra wrote novels, short stories, poetry, criticism, and a screenplay. He was a prolific translator of modern English and French literature into Arabic. Jabra was also an enthusiastic painter, and he pioneered the Hurufiyya movement, which sought to integrate traditional Islamic art within contemporary art through the decorative use of Arabic script.

Jacek Piekara is a Polish fantasy writer. He has published novels and short stories. He is known for his stories about inquisitor Mordimer Madderdin, which as of 2011 are collected in seven books.
