Mark Naumovich Bernes was a Soviet actor and singer, who performed some of the most poignant songs to come out of World War II, including "Dark Night" and "Cranes". His voice had some similarities to Bing Crosby, but his style was closer to French chansonniers such as Yves Montand.

After graduating from Wesleyan University in 1968, he received his doctorate in the study of religion from Harvard University and began teaching at Williams College in 1973. In 2007, Taylor moved from Williams College to Columbia University, where he chaired the Department of Religion until 2015.
