Manuel Irigoyen Arias y Larrea was a Peruvian lawyer, diplomat, historian, academic and politician. He graduated from the National University of San Marcos and served on its faculty. He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Peru and Senate of Peru. He served as minister of foreign affairs and economy and finance (1886-1887) in the Government of Peru, also serving as Ambassador to Belgium from 1861 to 1865, to Ambassador to Brazil from 1874 to 1877 and to Uruguay on two occasions. He was three times Prime Minister of Peru. He served as the President of the Senate from 1905 to 1906 and of the National Club (1901-1902).

Manuel José Quintana y Lorenzo, was a Spanish poet and man of letters.

Manuel Komroff was an American playwright, screenwriter, novelist, editor and translator. He was born in New York where he began his working life as a journalist. He also spent some time in Russia during the Russian revolution.

Manuel António de Sousa Lopes was a Cape Verdean novelist, poet and essayist. With Baltasar Lopes da Silva and Jorge Barbosa he was a founder of the journal Claridade, which contributed to the rise of Cape Verdean literature. Manuel Lopes wrote in Portuguese, using expressions typical for Cape Verdean Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole. He was one of those responsible for describing world calamities of the droughts that caused several deaths in São Vicente and Santo Antão.

Payno's most notable literature work include Los bandidos de Río Frio, a costumbrista novel which stood up as an important and iconic piece of the Mexican literature, which has been an inspiration source for other writers and artists, and also from which several film adaptations have been made in Mexico.
