Yunus Emre also known as Derviş Yûnus (1238–1328)
was a Turkish folk poet and Islamic Sufi mystic who greatly influenced three cultures. He wrote in Old Anatolian Turkish. His name, Yûnus, is the Arabic equivalent to the English name Jonah. The UNESCO General Conference unanimously passed a resolution declaring 1991 the 750th anniversary of the poet's birth, International Yunus Emre Year.
Yunus Rajabiy was a Soviet-Uzbek composer, instrumentalist, folklorist, academic, and leader of Uzbek music groups. In addition to composing much celebrated music, he systematically collected, documented, and recorded many Uzbek songs, preserving songs from collective memory.
Pengiran Muhammad Yusuf CBE, pen name Yura Halim, was a Bruneian nobleman, politician, civil servant, diplomat, and writer. He served as the Chief Minister of Brunei from 1967 to 1972. Halim wrote the lyrics for Brunei's national anthem, "Allah Peliharakan Sultan," in 1947. The song was adopted as the country's official national anthem in 1951, when it was still a British protectorate. Halim was longtime member of the Legislative Council of Brunei, serving on the council until his death in 2016.
Yuri Nikolaevich Arabov is a Russian screenwriter, writer, poet and educator. He is known for his long-lasting collaboration with Alexander Sokurov. He is an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (1999).
Yuri Karlovich Arnold, also Jury, Georgy, Yourij, and Arnol't, Arnol'd, was a Russian composer, musicologist, music critic, choral conductor, theorist and music educator. There is some speculation that he was employed by the tsarist police and that some of the writings attributed to him were actually written by Peshenin, who was paid to keep it a secret. Also that some of his theories on the history of Russian church music are now seen as false. Among his students were Allemanov and Yu Mel’gunov.
Yuri Lvovich Averbakh was a Russian chess grandmaster and author. He was chairman of the USSR Chess Federation from 1973 to 1978. He was the first centenarian FIDE Grandmaster. Despite his eyesight and hearing having worsened, by his 100th birthday he continued to devote time to chess-related activities.
