try abounding in libraries. The reasons
for this are twofold. In the frst place, libra-
ries are not plentiful in Russia. With the
exceptions of the rich Imperial Public Library
of St. Petersburg, the Library of the Imperial
Academy of Science in the вате city, the
Rumiantsev and the Historical Museums in
Moscow, and the libraries of Russian higher
institutions of learning, there are compara-
tively few large libraries of which Russia сап
boast. The second reason is that most of the
private libraries of апу importance belong to
the nobility and are not accessible to the
public. Much is said of the library of Mr.
А. S. Suvorin, the editor of the Novoe Vremia,
but even Russian bibliographers ате in the
dark as to its contents. А number of private
libraries are.said to exist outside of the two
Russian capitals, but hearsay is the оп1у
