Your excel. will observe by the letter which had the
honour t.o receive froln h. е. baron Budberg (а сору 0f which
and of Н. 1. M.—'s oukaz have sent to baron Nicolay), tbat
ат allowed to choose ап assistant who is to be styled соп-
sul, and that baron Budberg has most particularly recommen-
ded m-r Wilinghausen, а merchant in the City, as а proper
person to fill this situation; and as could not possibly have
had the most distant idea that а so ill qualified in every
respect could have been recommended by such high authority,
was happy to have ап opportunity of obliging his ехс. by
concurring with him in the choice of m-r W. for this purpose,
and therefore wrote ап answer to that etrect two days адо to
b-n Budberg. But yesterday оп the receipt of some letters
from ту friends in the City, was thrown into the greatest
astonishment to find that b-n Budberg should have been so
uninformed about this gentleman, who, so far from being а
person in whom 1 сап place trust and confidence, is engaged
in such persuits, that it would not only be most unpleasant
for те to be in апу way connected with him, as should
thereby risk the loss of ту character: but in whose hands
(to judge from what has occurred in his own business as а
merchant) large sums belonging to gov-t тау be endangered.
Оп receipt of this information yesterday, immediately dis-
patched ту servant to town, anrhope he will arrive in time
this day to prevent ту letter to b-n Budberg from beiug
forwarded by the foreign mail. ln the теап time take the
liberty to entreat у. excell. advice оп this delicate subjecL соп-
vinced that уои will at опсе see the improperty of ту being
so connected, and particularly as should consider myself
