Abstract. Оп Tuesday 17 јипе I waited ироп Mr. Talleyrand and

began the conversation by alluding to the changes he had hinted at

the night before and desired leave to repeat the substance of what

had passed at ту former interviews with him and which I had by

his desire communicated. Не agreed that the statement was accurate.

Proceeding therefore to consider the restoration of Hanover and

the ilii possidetis as the 6rst points from which апу negociation must

absolutely set out, laid down the principle that the restoration of

Hanover to Great Britain and that of Venice, Dalmatia and Istria to

the House of Austria, Naples to its legitimate sovereign and а pro-

vision for the king of Sardinia in Italy would be по more than а

fair equivalent for the recognizing the settlement of the diferent bran-

ches of Bonaparte's family and the other changes which have been

made by France in the state of Europe, and the abandonment оп the

part of Great Britain of the views and prospects ofered to her by

the present state of South America.

I could easily perceive that this last topic had great weight and

I therefore led him to conceive these plans to be extremely likely to

be speedily realized and I do believe that great efect will be produced

by intertaining and strengthening these apprehensions.

Mr. Talleyrand assured те that the Mouths of the Cattaro are actu-

ally delivered by the Russians to the Austrians and consequently now

occupied by France. That the French troops have actually received

orders to evacuate Germany the moment they received the above news

and that they must now be returning. That Mr. Rufm (this I already
