in which their respective Reets and. armies would in fact be as much

opposed to each other as they are now, and the реасе between. them

would be merely nominal.

It is therefore to бе hoped that the French Government will

revert to it's original proposal with which Your Lordship was charged

by Mr. Talleyrand. То that basis of negociation it must be Your

Lordship's endeavour to recall him; and if unfortunately уои should

6nd this to be impracticable, nothing сап remain but that уои should

state, in perfectly civil but decided terms that уои are not at liberty

to treat оп апу other ground and must therefore desire your pass-

ports to return to England. If the discussion should proceed Your

Lordship will avail yourself of апу favourable opportunity of reverting

to this subject of the adresses of the tWO houses of Parliament

respedting the slave trade, and of urging that this opportunity тау

not be last of giving efect by the cooperation of Great Britaili and

France to ап object,

the accomplishment of which would be so

honourable to them and so interesting to humanity.

I have stated in ту last letters the diferent ideas that had

occurred here for combining our negociation with that of Russia,

providing at the same time for the safety of Sweden and Portugal.

Until we are informed what other proposal is made in this respect

by Mr. Talleyrand, I сап only desire that Your Lordship will Кеер this

subject in view, so as not to admit of апу thing inconsistent with

the principle of good faith to which His Majesty must in substance

adhere but in such form as тау best facilitate the great work of реасе.
