plague, for that calamity was then raging in Geor-
gia and in some parts 0f the mountains, and ha-
ve had subsequently а great deal to do with the ple-

so early become acquainted wiht the horrors of that
terrible malady and with the means to be employed,
if not for its сите, at least against its progress.
I was received by the brave prince Zizianof with
all possible kindness, and very soon after in Novem-
ber of the some year began ту frst campaign,
by accompanying prince Zizianof himself in ап expedi-
tion against the Persian fortress Gandja, now Elizabet-
pol. We arrived in view of the fortress оп the 2d of
December, and had the same day а most smart епда-
gement with the Persians, which ended in our асси-
pation 0f the whole 0f the suburbs of Gandja.
In his report of this engagement prince Zizianof
was so good as to mention ту пате in а Hattering
manner, and received the order of St Апп of the third
