I made part of this corps, and during опт епсатр-
ment in that place I was dangerously ill of а nervous
fever; for З от 4 (lays, ту life was despaired 0f, but
I recovered, received the command of а. brigade, and
marched in the beginning 0f August to rejoin the main
army near Rustchouk.
0ur commander-in-chief had failed in ап assault
оп that fortress, and the Turkish force newly assem-
bled under the command 0f the seraskier konchanz-
Ali, was marching to its relief; about опе half of our
army, under the command of с. Serge kamensky, was
sent to meet this advancing force. We found the Turks
encamped and entrenched оп the river Yantra near
the small village of Batine. Оп the 16-th of August
we made а strong reconnaissance; but the position
was judged too strong to be attacked by so inferior
а force,
and accordingly the general-in-chief himself
сате ир, leaving only а small portion of his troops
blockading Roustchouk. Оп the 26-th of the same
month of August we had а decisive general епдаде-
ment. The Turkish сатр was stormed after а very
brave resistance, the seraskier himself killed with а
great number of his теп, about 7.0 prisoners; 4
pashas, the whole of artillery and near Т) colours
were the trophies of this battle, which took place
precisely two years, day after day, before the terrible
battle of Borodino.
The surrender of Roustchouk was опе of its conse-
quences. Two days after the battle I made part of
а small expedition under count St. Priest towards the
Turkish fortress of Sistova. where we сате ир with а
force of more than 15W теп and 4 pieces of light
