Etchmiadzine, they were continually hovering about

us, and firing оп our lines, so that we were obliged

to have about опе third of our теп continually under

arms to repel those attacks. This was ropeated by

them every night and every day of our march (in all

10 days) to our frontier.

Оп the 8-th 0f September they tormented us in qui-

te а new way; we were marching through high and

dry grass and the wind was in our rear; the Persians

set fre to the grass in several places. The connagration

soon reached оиг rear-guard, and threatened danger

to our baggage, our sick and the caissons of the аг-

tillery as well as the infantry ammunition, at that то-

ment we were attacked ап all sides by overpowering

numbers, nothing but the most resolute conduct of

our old Georgian regiments however few in number

could save us from destruction.

We got over all our difEculLies and were astonished

ourselves after the heat of the action to find oursel-

ves safe.

The weakness and cowerdice of the епету having

prevented them from completing our destruction.

А last attack was made ироп us by the king 0f

Persia at the eniry of the defle at the other end of

which ker-khouly-khan with (З(ЮО теп from Georgia

had соте to meet him. The amazing valour of our

soldiers of the Georgian army could alone save us in

such а situation, we beat of the епету behind us,

forced our way through the deflle occupied by ker-

khouly-khan and after that day saw по more of the

Persians.
