was taken prisoner with all that survived 0f his tro-

ops. Му regiment was оп that day with З others in

the advanced corps under the command of general

Woinof; we were the frst who entered the town,

after having stormed three• external redoubts; the со-

lonels besides myself were: Paskewitch, since feld-

marschal, prince of Warsaw, count S-t Priest killed

as lieutenant-general at Rheims in 1814, and count

Balmann, а most intimate friend of mine, ап offcer

of the very greatest distinction, and who died in 1812,

while forming а new regiment оп the opening of our

great national war.

For Bazardchik 1 was promoted to the rank 0f та-

jor-general.

Four days after this fortunate engagement, I made

part of а detachment, under general Ziseref, against

the fortress of Varna; but the Turks succeeding in sen-

ding in by sea, а supply of теп and provisons so

that after some slight engagements in the gardens

surrounding Varna. we received orders to leave that

place and marched frst to Prawody in the Balkan,

оп the great road to Constantinople, very soon after,

the army concentrated near Schoumla, we joined the

general in chief in his сатр near that place. Оп the

11-th 0f Јипе 1810 took place the battle of Schumla,

but though we drove the Turks out of every position

outside of the fortress, we did not succeed in taking

that important place, defended by the grand-visir in

person, with the best troops of Turkey. Soon after

the general in chief marched ироп Roustchouk having

а strong corps under his brother before Schoumla.
