December and passing through TiHis, arrived оп the

28th at general Gouliakow's сатр. 0perations began

two days after; we had ап insignifcant engagement

with the Lesghuines оп the lth of January 1804; оп

the 9th we took the Lesghuin village katechi; оп the

13th we beat them at а place called Tali; but оп the

15th оп entering а defle in the great village of Dja-

ry, а sudden attack of the Lesghuines оп some Geor-

gian militia, who were before our principal column,

of our reserve beating back the Lesghuines, but too

late to save the brave general Gouliakow, who was

killed at the moment, when we were driven down [he

precipice.

We repulsed the епету from the feld of action, but

could not fulfl the intentions of our late general. For

in the course of the afray our loss had been very

considerable the results, however were the same for

after three days encampment in view of our епету—

sion and part of their tribute, we accordingly passed

the Alazany. I then went back t.o Tiflis, where prince

Zizianow had just arrived after taking Gandja by storm.

Soon after I was sent to the king 0f Imeretia, then

independent of Russia, with propositions to which he
